Well......here's the first few pictures of the new V8 'toy'.
It's a 1959 Ford Pop hotrod running a Ford 351 Cleveland V8 (5.8lt), auto box, Jag IRS rear and a beam axle on 4 bar link system front.
Needs a complete re-trim and sort out inside + a few other bits and bobs. It won't be on the road for a while as I want to get everything sorted before I start using it. Deal done today, pick her up on Thursday.
It drives like a hotrod (very rough), sounds like a hotrod (very loud) and looks like a hotrod (very yellow !!).

Well the work has begun !

Had most of yesterday striping out the old interior. Now to sort the wiring and move a few things around before starting to put a new interior in.

Pop update - Got myself a set of Hyundai Coupe seats from Ebay during the week, so that was this weekends job sorted. So....seat subframes made and fitted, although still need welding. Seats in final position. Wiring 99.9% finished. New centre console starting to take shape.

Interior coming along quite nicely. Passenger side footwell all done, console all trimmed. New rear discs and pads turned up today as well, so have to get back to that again. Ignore the door cards - there on the list !

Well the Pop is back on the road !   Very Happy

All the interior done except the roof lining and the door cards. A few little 'issues' on it's first run out tonight, but hopefully nothing major.

Things not going well with this bloody car ! On the first 'proper' run out about 40 miles round trip, it coughed and farted, run like a bag of sh*t and cut out on me several times. Then later that evening was just nipping into town and it completely died on me. Got one of the Brother-in-law's to come and tow me to the garage that does my MOT for me.

Went to see them next morning to ask them to see what's gone on. After the 'not sure we well be able to sort it - can't plug it in !' bollocks finally got them to look it over. Looks like the coil has fried itself. They also say I ought to replace the HT lead, points and condenser. They couldn't (or wouldn't) get the bits or do the work so it was a call to the recovery to get the thing home again !

Off to pick up a new coil tomorrow. Hopefully this will fix the bloody thing. Anyway, can't see me keeping it for long now. Really can't do with all the grief the cars giving me. It was only supposed to be an interior re-trim. So far as well as the interior this is the additional stuff :

Rewire with new fuse board
New rear discs and pads (bastard job - never again !!!!)
Replace various nuts and bolts on the rear shocks that were wrong /missing.
Free off front calipers.
Remove half the exhaust and alter to sort out the downpipe not fitting the manifold one side.
Strengthen the steering column hangers to stop the thing wobbling all over !
Put in steel to enable seat belts to be fitted.
Free of adjusters on front adjustable shocks.

Even after all this it still isn't a great handling thing. The front seems too soft even on the hardest setting, so on back roads it's really not great at all. I think the rear shocks could also do with replacing as they creak and groan a fare bit. Part of the steering linkage (obviously made to suit) has a worn sliding joint in it, so still a bit of vibration and movement in the steering. Oh, and it's as noisy as hell inside !

Much as still love the 'idea' of this car, the ownership has not lived up to my hopes.

It lives again !!!  Smile

After a new coil and points and a bit of fettling it lives. Very short run out 'just in case' passed off okay. Bit longer run tomorrow hopefully and see how things go. Will still be for sale though.

Hi Ian, love the Pop.

I had its much older grandfather, the 1938 Ford model 7Y, marketed as the Ford Eight:
Same body but with no boot (spare wheel fitted), opening front screen and wind down 'rear' windows!

Running the RV8 engine with side exit straight through pipes it was seriously loud but sounded great. BW35 gearbox, 8" Ford rear axle (Ford Mustang). Took me almost 3 years to get it reliable but it was a great project. All the best with yours.
Nick.

Hi Nick,

Good to see you on here. I'm afraid my journey with the Pop was very short lived ! Ended up doing a lot more work than I was led to believe when I bought it. Then once on the road it broke down twice. So two rides on the recovery truck with two weeks ! Fellow club member and friend Paul got it fixed for me but the joy had long since gone, so got it moved on.

Shame to hear its gone Ian, I really loved mine and if a had more garage space I would still have it.

I do understand though, I bought mine as a 'project' and spent 100 times longer working on it than I ever did driving it.
